29 November 2020
On Friday 20th November we suspended our usual timetable and focused on Careers, Mental Health and Wellbeing. Miss Royal, our Careers Co-ordinator, writes about the Careers work done with 3 year groups:
"Our Year 7's spent their first Aspire Day broadening their understanding of the range of job roles and sectors available in the world of work. They were introduced to employability skills and qualities and exploring which they are developing through their education and outside of school. This involved interviewing their teacher and our Enterprise Advisor to improve their confidence when meeting professionals and begin understanding pathways.
Our Year 10's were given the chance to learn about various careers, with some becoming Crime Scene Investigators, Sports Professionals and Vloggers to see practical links to the Maths, English and Science curriculum. They heard from a variety of local employers including BAE Systems, Leyland Trucks, NNL and Forbes Solicitors. They also began exploring Post 16 options including questioning our Amazing Apprenticeship's reprensentative and introduced to Interview processes and techniques to help them prepare for future interviews.
Our Year 11's worked hard on their CVs, Personal Statements and Letters of Application to prepare them for their next steps. They learnt the importance of portraying their personal skills and qualities and the need to 'sell' their individual strengths and experience positively to employers and Colleges - essential to give them the advantage in the job market. They also met our Amazing Apprenticeship's representative, as well as representatives from a variety of local Colleges, all of whom they challenged with many inquisitive questions."
Our PSHE Co-ordinator, Mrs Sweeney, said that Year 8 worked on topics involving Health and Wellbeing, What is Mental Health?, Positive Body Image, What is abuse? and Types of Bullying. Mrs Sweeney says that Year 9 considered, Self Esteem Changes, Homophobic, Biphobic & Transphobic bullying-Bullying in all its forms, Dealing with Grief and Loss, Media and Airbrushing, Cancer Prevention and a Healthy Lifestyle.
These days are a vital part of our provision - preparing our students for life beyond school - and all year groups responded and engaged very well with the topics during the day.
ASPIRE Day 2 is coming up soon!
