This Week:

  • Trainees – Home study through University of Cumbria and CPD through our CPD Schedule.
  • NQTs – Meetings arranged for Thursdays now through Teams.
  • Walton Connects – date for next meeting is this Thursday at 1:30pm and the main agenda item will ‘how do we ensure consistency across subjects without straight-jacketing and de-professionalising staff?’ This was something that emerged from the School Improvement Conference… It would also be interesting to have a brief discussion around department ‘top tips’ for engaging students in remote learning.
  • CPD – Several members of staff are offering tips for remote learning: JMJ, LCH, DTU, MCS.
    • ‘Remote Learning Team’ - Those who expressed an interest in moving forward with this method have been added to a Team.  The above ‘experts’ have kindly agreed to offer CPD slots this week. Please contact them if you are interested but ARE NOT in the ‘Remote Learning’ Team.

Reflect…

In its research on remote learning, the EEF reminds us that ‘Teaching quality is more important than how lessons are delivered’.

Please keep in mind our evidence-informed acronym when planning remote learning: REMOTE:

Rretrieval and recap activities. Low-stakes. Quick feedback. Self-marking.

EEngage students – stimulus, questions, ‘chat’, feedback etc.

Mmotivate through peer interaction (peer marking, sharing WAGOLLs, prompt live discussion through ‘chat’ function of Teams)

OOutcomes – make explicit using check lists, success criteria, weekly plan/big picture etc. INTENT.

TTeaching quality – this is more important than how it is delivered.  Think about how you assess what students have learnt.

EExpectations – be realistic but aspirational.

As we try our best to engage as many students as possible so that they do not feel 'remote' (see definition above), our thoughtful approach to planning becomes even more crucial. Many thanks in advance for everything you are doing to ensure that our young people have provision to work at home.

Hi Rachel,

Thank you so much for this. I really enjoyed listening to you and watching the slides. I would love to listen to your digest this way every week, even when we get back to some sort of normal as it made me really take the time to sit and listen rather than skim read (sorry) an email and forget to look back on it which I think we may be all guilty of during our busy school lives.

Thanks again
