Teaching and Learning Priorities

Climate for learning students will be enthused by their learning and will be focused, absorbed and attentive (DMC).

Vocabulary the words that we use and expect the students to be able to use in context, to succeed in their lives beyond Walton le Dale High School (ACH).

Purposeful Interactions by all if students are communicating, it must be purposeful allow their needs to be met.  Interactions should enhance the learning of ALL students at ALL times (CRO).

This Week:

  • NQTs – Meetings this week: JMJ – Tuesday period 3; RHU – Wednesday period 3; both in RLO’s office.
  • CPD for new staff and NQTs– None this week as we are on INSET
  • Wednesday – Pastries and Progress: focus on vocabulary with ACH
  • Open Door Week this Week!  Use your Open Door praise postcards to give to those who you visit.  Tell them something that you learnt/will use. Remember to take a raffle ticket if you visit someone or are ‘seen’. It is all about taking an active role in your CPD.  Tickets mean prizes!.
  • Christmas Markets – this should be a great opportunity to find some unique gifts for Christmas gifting.  Thanks to those offering stalls.  Make sure you email RLO with a list of what you are selling/email directly out to staff so that they know how much money to bring!!!  If anyone would like to bake for the occasion, please feel free.

17 Principles of Instruction

Visualise This!

This week, think about how you use visualisers to enhance learning.   There are pockets of excellent practice with this hardware around school so spare ten minutes to try it out this week. Or spend 10 minutes dropping in on someone using one. 

Top Tips for Visualiser use:

  • Showing answers that students have written.. rather than just reading them out. Show an answer.. how many marks.. justify.. improve.
  • Use it midway through a task to demonstrate a student’s outstanding work as a form of peer modelling.
  • To help write evaluations. Talk as a class about how to structure the written evaluations of practical work and then write an exemplar (WAGOLLs) as if performed, while the students are writing theirs.
  • Demonstrating writing music notation…drawing treble clefs etc. Accurate placing of notes on the musical stave.
  • Go over past papers with pupils, or show them a specific piece of work that I only have one copy of such as an answer sheet or another piece of work to compare theirs with. Use it to show pupils how to solve various mathematical problems and how to lay out their work.

A reminder of the key focuses within departments:

  • Expressive Arts – improving engagement in Year 9
  • Computing – Developing the use of Teams to allow learning beyond the classroom
  • Mathematics – recall and retention
  • Art – Engagement of boys
  • English – use of knowledge organisers
  • MFL – Speaking examination – extended pupil responses; Listening and reading: developing confidence
  • Humanities - progress of middle attaining boys
  • PE  – Link between theory at KS3 and KS4
  • Technology – Developing the use of homework at KS3 to prepare students for KS4 course

Have a look at the attached document which includes tips for using the visualiser.  This technology is a real time-saver and is economical as it reduces photocopying.   CPD to follow on this in the new year; hopefully all classrooms will be equipped by then.
