Teaching and Learning Priorities
Climate for learning – students will be enthused by their learning and will be focused, absorbed and attentive.
Vocabulary – the words that we use and expect the students to be able to use in context, to succeed in their lives beyond Walton le Dale High School
Purposeful Interactions by all – if students are communicating, it must be purposeful allow their needs to be met. Interactions should enhance the learning of ALL students at ALL times.
This Week:
- The thought for the week this week is ‘new beginnings’
- Set the standard – use the classroom routines in every lesson
- Brilliant Teaching and Learning – refer to the updated Toolkit when planning
- Trainees – we are not taking trainees until after Christmas.
- NQTs – Please email transfer documentation to RLO (end of year targets, etc). One-to-one meetings will commence next week.
Reflect on Your Practice:
Hit the ground sprinting!
As teachers, we are often partial to a check-list or two. Have a look at the following check-list to prepare for your first day with the students:
- Do you have your new staff planner?
- Have you logged on to Class Charts and familiarised yourself?
- Do you understand the new behaviour management policy and are you ready to use it?
- Have you checked that your Written Communication Policy is displayed on a wall near to your screen?
- Have you stored/displayed your updated ‘Brilliant Teaching and Learning Toolkit’ somewhere visible for you when you plan?
- Do you have exercise books/pens/stick-in sheets/glue sticks etc for those first lessons?
- Have you created seated plans for your classes?
- Can everyone see the screen from every seat in your room?
- Do you have your mini-whiteboards and pens ready?
- If your visualiser is installed, have you switched it on? (ask RLO if you need help)
Top Tip Schedule
The following schedule was circulated before the summer break. Subject Heads, please ensure that someone from your department is ready to share a ‘Top Tip’ on the designated date.

CPD Cascade
Please familiarise yourself with the CPD information in the newly updated Staff Guide. The CPD Menu may be of interest to you. In addition, the CPD Calendar is also useful as it provides dates for training and CPD, some mandatory and some optional. Again, please look at this (it was also circulated before the break).
Subject Networks
Many of you will attend subject network meetings. With the implementation of the new Education Inspection Framework, it is more important than ever to seek support and guidance on subject-specific pedagogy from those in similar contexts. RLO has a list of contacts, should you not already have them.
